The Yorkshire and Humber Secure Data Environment (Y&H SDE)

The Y&H SDE is a secure NHS data storage and access system. It brings together healthcare data in one place, and allows researchers and innovators to use it safely for their work.

Our SDE provides a chance to completely transform the Yorkshire and Humber region by creating infrastructure for storing data and allowing secure access to it, while maintaining the highest standards of NHS data confidentiality.

Our Ambitions

The Yorkshire and Humber SDE ambition is to deliver improved patient care and safety, transform services, reduce inequalities and enhance life chances. We aim to become a flagship SDE by fostering more data-driven innovation and better partnerships with researchers, innovators and people we serve.

The Y&H SDE benefits from well-established collaboration across the region, which is the key strength behind the technology and projects running in the area. By connecting organisations across all three ICBs, the Y&H SDE becomes a unified “single front door” to access rich datasets.

By actively engaging with new and existing data providers, we strive to expand our datasets for enhancing patient care, sustaining the NHS, and supporting research and innovation.

Our Research Data

Check out the different datasets available within our Secure Data Environment (Yorkshire & Humber SDE) for your research. If you’re interested in accessing any of these datasets, please contact us.

Data Security

The Y&H SDE adheres to legal frameworks and follows best practices to ensure safe and proper use of the data we store and manage. This involves complying with codes of practice under the Data Protection Act 2018, national standards, transparency notices, the “Five Safes” framework for data security, and implementing measures like data access controls, de-identification, and secure data environment guidelines.

Researchers

More efficient Data Search: The Y&H SDE serves as a “single front door” allowing the researchers speed up the process of data discovery and acquisition within the region.

Enhanced Collaboration: Our SDE fosters collaboration between researchers, so they can share expertise and insights to drive innovative research projects forward.

Improved Data Quality: By accessing comprehensive and high-quality datasets, researchers can conduct more robust analyses and draw more accurate conclusions.

Patients & Public

Increased Transparency: Patients and public know how their data can be used within the SDE, promoting trust to share NHS healthcare with researchers.

Active Engagement: The SDE prioritises patient and public involvement and engagement, empowering individuals to be part of Citizens Jury, share their views on anonymised health data, and contribute to future collaborations.

Efficient Treatment and Care: The research projects conducted using the data within the SDE will contribute to better treatment and care of people in our region and beyond.

NHS

Growth in Life Sciences Sector: The availability of secure access to NHS data within the SDE contributes to the growth of the UK Life Sciences sector, attracting investment and driving innovation.

Enhanced Research Activity: The SDE facilitates increased quality and volume of research activity, leading to better healthcare outcomes and improved patient care.

Streamlined Processes: By streamlining data ingestion, analysis, and egress processes, the SDE Network optimises service delivery, spurs innovation, and empowers local data providers to realise all benefits of shared data for research.

Partners & Data providers

Contribution to Healthcare Improvement: Data providers from around the region contribute valuable data to the SDE, playing a crucial role in improving healthcare research.

Collaboration Opportunities: The researchers’ collaborations, findings, or data linkages within the SDE can enrich each data providers’ datasets.

Enhanced reputation and visibility: Data providers and partners enhance their regional reputation, recognition, and positive impact in the healthcare ecosystem.
