The pandemic has created a large increase in the number of children who are persistently absent from school. While the links between school absence and academic attainment are well established, less research has investigated the effect of school absence on later-life outcomes. Recent work from the group (Warburton et al, in preparation) has established a link between performance on the EYFSP (Early Years Foundation Stage Profile) at the end of reception year and later NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training) status, with academic attainment partially mediating the effect, and one of the main predictors of later NEET status is academic attainment, especially at the end of KS4. It is therefore possible that school absence has an effect on later NEET status, potentially through its influence on intervening academic attainment. We will use the education records within Connected Bradford to explore the relationship between historic school absence records and NEET.
