Development Coordination Disorder and Education Outcomes, CY P12 24 06

Lay Summary

There has been a rapid increase in the number of individuals waiting for diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders over the last decade. One approach is to use earlier signals to identify those at greater risk of being diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders to expedite access to support. BiB and CAER have found that the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP), conducted across England (Reception yea), can predict those at greater risk of later diagnosis of autism and SEND (e.g., Wright et al, 2019). One aim of this project is to conduct a conceptual replication of the work to understand whether Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) can similarly be picked up through EYFSP outcomes. The second aim is to better understand the impact of a DCD diagnosis and later educational outcomes. Research has identified that motor skills and DCD are linked to education outcomes (e.g., Dionne et al., 2023). However sample sizes have been small and analyses have generally only focused on the impact on Maths and Handwriting. Finally, there is a lack of understanding about how DCD impacts wider schooling and outcomes e.g., attendance and Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET).
