NEET_2 Congenital Anomolies as a risk factor, CY P09 23 05
Lay Summary
Advances in prenatal screening, neonatal care and surgical interventions have resulted in a 70% reduction in infant mortality due to congenital anomaly (CA) over the last forty years. It is now estimated that 71-96% of those born with CA will survive at least 20 years, creating a need for research into their quality of survival. Despite this improvement, those with CA face difficulties for life. For example, those with defects may require frequent hospital visits that put them behind at school, and recent work from BiB (Wands et al, in preparation) has found that those with congenital anomalies reached less grades of expected or above expected across all subjects at KS1. It is possible that this propagates through the school system and ultimately influences their chances of later becoming NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training).
