This project seeks to investigate the relationship between where young people live, where they go to school, and key educational outcomes. Specifically, it will explore the relationship between secondary school accessibility and critical educational outcomes including attendance, exclusion and attainment. The project seeks to understand whether students are systematically disadvantaged by a lack of viable travel options to and from school, potentially imposing a “spatial penalty” on their educational success.

The project examines crime patterns around schools, which are important locations where large numbers of young people gather at predictable times. While schools can influence local opportunities for crime, victimisation, and exposure to harm, the immediate environments surrounding schools remain under-researched. Existing studies often rely on broad neighbourhood measures that fail to capture detailed spatial and temporal patterns.
