This study has been requested by Central Government with the aim to understand how children with neurodevelopmental or mental health conditions—such as autism, ADHD, conduct disorder, anxiety, and depression—are supported in schools. Specifically, we want to find out whether these children receive additional help through Special Educational Needs (SEN) support or an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
SEN support and EHCPs are designed to ensure children with additional needs get the help they need to thrive in education. However, we know that not all children who need support receive it, and the reasons behind this can vary—from delays in diagnosis to differences in how schools and local authorities provide support.We will explore how many children with these diagnoses go on to receive SEN support or an EHCP. We will also look at whether there are patterns across different groups of children – such as differences by age, gender, or ethnicity – as well as temporal trends.
Understanding these patterns will help identify where there may be gaps in support, and how we can improve access to educational help for children who need it. The findings can support schools, health services, and policymakers in ensuring every child gets the right support at the right time.
