Previous research has indicated that the diagnosis of neurodevelopmental conditions including autism and ADHD is moderated by sex and ethnicity. For example, males are far more likely to be diagnosed with Autism, with a typical ratio of 3:1 compared to females. Concurrently, internalising conditions like depression and anxiety are more common among those with autism and ADHD, but less research has investigated how the relationship between the two may be moderated by the same demographic factors. This study aims to take an intersectional approach to the relationship between neurodivergence and internalising disorders. We plan to identify individuals from primary care records who have been diagnosed as having autism, ADHD, depression, or anxiety. We will use EYFSP records from the education dataset to identify a cohort of individuals of a similar age, to avoid issues with data censoring and changes in diagnoses over time. We will assess the relationship between a neurodivergence and internalising disorders and investigate how sex and ethnicity moderate the relationship.
