Shames Maskeen

1. Who you are?

I’m Dr Shames Maskeen, Associate Director of The Race Institute and Senior Lecturer in Psychology specialising in widening participation, intersectionality and cultural change. My research focusses on tackling racial inequities and the intersections of class, culture, religion and gender experienced by racialised minorities in Higher Education and beyond. I am also passionate about ensuring that research and services are shaped by the communities they are intended to benefit.

2. Why you wanted to be part of the group?

I wanted to be part of the group because decisions about how health data is accessed and used should not be made without meaningful public involvement. The Yorkshire & Humber Secure Data Environments have enormous potential to support research and improve health outcomes, but it is equally important that issues such as trust, transparency, representation and inequalities are considered. I wanted to bring my own perspective to those conversations, while also learning from the experiences and perspectives of other public members.

3. What has been a highlight for you whilst being a Public member?

A highlight has been seeing public involvement treated as a meaningful part of the work rather than simply something that needs to be done. I have particularly valued the opportunity to contribute to discussions, ask questions and challenge thinking from a public perspective. I have also enjoyed the conversations with my fellow members who have a wide range of experiences and expertise. It has also been rewarding to see how our contributions can genuinely influence the development of the NHS Secure Data Environment.
