Data Use Register

How to navigate the fields of the Data User Register of Yorkshire and Humber SDE

The Data User Register (DUR) is an official list of all the research projects that are making use of the Yorkshire and Humber Secure Data Environment’s data. Every SDE has to publish its DUR to make sure the way the health and care data is being used is transparent, and to help build trust and accountability.

Why we share data across Secure Data Environments (SDEs)

To support specific research projects that have been approved through rigorous review, our SDE may share information with other NHS SDEs. This enables researchers to answer important health questions using data from different regions, especially where local data alone may be insufficient (e.g. rare disease research). These collaborations aim to deliver clear public benefit and avoid duplication.

How we protect your privacy

We only share data for projects that have been approved by a Data Access Committee (DAC), which includes patient and public representatives.  Before sharing, we remove direct identifiers such as name or NHS number. The data is transferred securely using encrypted systems. If you have opted out of sharing your data for research and planning, your information will not be included.

Transparency

Each SDE’s Data Use Register will be updated with details of the project, so you can see how data is being used. The current version of the DUR is a beta stage release and its co-development with users and members of the public is ongoing. It is expected that work to optimise the DUR will continue into 2026/27.

What each entry means

The Data Use Register uses formal language to describe each project, and this list shows what each term means:

Title

Clear, concise title of the research project

Lay Summary
A non-technical description of the research that explains the purpose, methods, and expected outcomes of the study. This will help you to understand what the project is about without requiring specialised knowledge.

Project ID (example: SDE_YH_PROJ_DC40)
An identifier code assigned to the specific project. This allows for easy tracking and reference of the project within the data management system.

Legal name
The official legal name of the organisation or institution conducting the research.

Date of counter-signed contract
The date when the Data Access Agreement (DAA) or Data Sharing Agreement (DSA) was officially signed by all parties. This document outlines the terms and conditions for accessing and using the dataset.

Health Research Classification System (HRCS) Category

The HRCS is a standardised way of classifying health research, and is used across the health and research community in the UK. You can find out more about the HRCS by visiting the website of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration. Each project can have multiple categories, showing the research relates to several different areas of health. For example, it might relate to infection, blood, and skin.

Public Benefit Statement

A description in plain English of the anticipated outcomes, or impact of project on the general public.

Multiple SDE indicator

This shows if the project uses data from several SDEs.

Name of SDE Parties

Where several SDEs are involved, their names will be listed here.

Is this SDE Lead?

If the project does use data from several SDEs then this will show that Yorkshire and Humber SDE is the lead SDE.

Project Status

This shows if the project is live (either with contracts signed, or data in use) or completed.

Further Information

This field is for capturing online link(s) that provide additional project information. Examples include the organisation’s website, articles, social media posts, or a project-specific website, where available.
